The Mondavi Center(530) 754-5000 The Robert and Margrit The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, opened in 2002, is Northern California's premier performance facility one that brings world-class performers and distinguished speakers to campus and puts the campus's own students on an inspiring stage. The center features a 1,800-seat hall and 250-seat studio theater with state-of-the-art acoustics. Department of Music112 Music Building Calendar of Events The Department of Music presents more than 100 performances each year by groups including the UC Davis Symphony Orchestra, University Chorus and Chamber Singers, Empyrean Ensemble, Baroque Ensemble, Early Music Ensemble, Jazz Band, Concert Band, Gospel Choir and Wind Ensemble. The department also sponsors an annual artist-in-residence program that brings renowned performers to local stages and classrooms. The calendar of events is accessible from the department's homepage. Music Library The music library, which is open to the public, houses a listening facility as well as an extensive recording collection, music-related videos and study scores. The collection of reference materials includes dictionaries and encyclopedias, thematic catalogs, and foreign language dictionaries. Additional scores and music books are located in the Shields Library. The music library, open Monday through Friday, is located in Room 112C of the Music Building. Department of Theatre and Dance222 Wright Hall Productions With five main performance spaces, including the The Mondavi Center, the Department of Theatre and Dance presents a variety of drama and dance productions each season. Granada Artists in Residence Since 1982 the UC Davis-Granada Artists-in-Residence program has brought three artists to campus each academic year to teach and create a work for public performance. Unique in American university theatre, the program provides an opportunity for graduate and undergraduate students to work with major theatre and dance practitioners. Campus Community Book ProjectCampus Community Relations The Campus Community Book Project seeks to promote a greater sense of community at UC Davis by encouraging the UC Davis family to share the experience of reading the same book and participating in discussion groups and other activities. The Book — The 2008-09 book is Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, A Man Who Would Cure the World by Tracy Kidder. The book is available from the UC Davis Bookstore for $9.95. Museums, Galleries and ArtRichard L. Nelson Gallery and Fine Arts CollectionFirst Floor, Art Building The Richard L. Nelson Gallery and Fine Arts Collection houses a large and diverse collection of 18th- and 19th-century European and American prints; Middle Eastern paintings and artifacts; and works by famous Post-Modern masters Robert Arneson, Wayne Thiebaud, David Gilhooley, Roy DeForest and Manuel Neri. Named for the art department's first chair, the gallery exhibits about six shows during the academic year, including traveling exhibitions by internationally-known artists and the popular Annual Artists' Valentines Benefit Exhibition. Carl N. Gorman Museum1316 Hart Hall The Carl N. Gorman Museum is one of only a few galleries in the nation featuring contemporary Native American Art. It is named after Carl Nelson Gorman, a Navajo artist and advocate, and a founding faculty member of the Native American Studies Department at UC Davis. The Design Museum145 Walker Hall The Design Museum explores diverse topics and media with an emphasis on ethnographic arts and consumer cultures. The museum is internationally known, with innovative exhibitions based on design from a global perspective. Historical cultural artifacts, contemporary functional objects and creative installations are presented in changing spaces designed specifically for each exhibit. The museum also serves as a studio/laboratory for the design exhibition classes. Memorial Union GallerySecond Floor, Memorial Union Building The Memorial Union Art Gallery features a changing series of exhibitions devoted primarily to contemporary and historical California Art. All exhibitions are free of charge, and they are intended to compliment and enhance the educational and cultural activities available to the campus community. Basement GalleryBasement of Art Building The Basement Gallery is a student-run gallery featuring shows by undergraduate and graduate students of the UC Davis Art Studio program. Craft Center GallerySouth Silo The Craft Center Gallery exhibits work of staff, participants and friends of the Craft Center. Often the shows are the first public exposure of an artists work, but just as often they present the most recent crafts of long-practicing artisans. Craft Center shows can be composed of a variety of media or they can feature the potential of a single art form. Art in the LibraryShields Library The University Library collects the works of current and former members of the UC Davis art department. Art on display includes works by Robert Arneson, Squeak Carnwath, Roy DeForest, David Gilhooly, David Hollowell, George Longfish, Roland Petersen, Hassel Smith and Wayne Thiebaud. Also featured in the Shields Library are black-and-while photographs from the "American Farm" collection, a portrait of the nation's agriculture and the profound transformation it has undergone over the last 200 years. As a whole, the full collection spans more than a century and the work of over 80 photographers. The collection was created by Maisie and Richard Conrat, and a copy of their book, The American Farm, is on reserve in Shields Library. Art in Public PlacesThe Art Studio Program of the Department of Art and Art History offers information on art in public places on campus, from the Egghead Series by Robert Arneson and Portrait of a DNA Sequence by Roger Berry to works by Deborah Butterfield and Guy Dill. The Egghead SeriesFive Locations in the Core Campus The Egghead Series by Robert Arneson is among the most recognizable art at UC Davis and a favorite for visitor photographs. The five Eggheads are located as follows: Bookhead, Shields Library plaza; Yin & Yang, Fine Arts Complex; See No Evil/Hear No Evil, east lawn of King Hall (in storage during the construction at King Hall); Eye on Mrak (Fatal Laff), Mrak Hall mall; and Stargazer, between North Hall and Young Hall. TicketsThe Mondavi Center Ticket Office The The Mondavi Center Ticket Office handles ticket sales for the Robert and Margrit The Mondavi Center for the Performing Arts, the Department of Music, and the Department of Theatre and Dance. UC Davis Ticket Office The UC Davis Ticket Office located at Freeborn Hall handles ticket sales for Aggie Athletics, Associated Students of UC Davis and other ticketed events at Freeborn Hall and Recreation Hall. |
